Hi all... I'm so excited to be teaching a new 3- week series at The WorldDance &FItness studio up in Marin.

THE CORE OF TRIBAL FUSION: 3 week series.
Thursdays, March 13, 20, 27th. 6pm -7:15pm. $15/drop in. or $40 for series.
@ World Dance & Fitness, San Anselmo, CA.

To register, or for more info, call me 510-932-2107, or email debrubin3@yahoo.com.

In this series, we will explore the foundation and stylization of Tribal Fusion Bellydance--from the core. Classes will include a brief warm up, including some of deb's 'special stash' of core integration yoga for bellydance:, drilling of isolations and technique, and learning a choreography.

Each week will focus on a slightly different aspect:

Week 1: Engaging the core: Slow and Slinky.
Learn how to achieve that slow, slinky, sultry ooey-gooey look of Tribal bellydance. Focus will be on strengthening the core, engaging the midline, and increasing flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to support controlled, sultry, snake-like dancing. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization!

Week 2: Rocking the core: popping and locking.
Focus this week will be on isolations, shimmies, and up tempo dancing. Choreography learned this week can be done solo, or in conjunction with prior week’s combo.

Week 3: Dancing outside the Box.
Putting it all together, along with traditional ATS techniques and combos to create a true ‘fusion’ choreography.

Hope you can make it!

We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the dance community. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

So, I have created a networking site on Ning just for us, called Tribe Refugee Bellydancers! We will all need a place to meet up, so I started one and now I'm telling all ya'll. I think of this as the place we gather when/if Tribe comes crashing down, so we don't all turn into lost little sheep, baa'ing into the darkness, all alone.

DESCRIPTION:
12-2pm: Core Integration, Yoga for dancers:
Drawing from yoga, feldenkrais, pilates, and Deb's personal 'stash', this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal
articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility to directly support your dancing technique and prevent injuries. Focus will be on increasing pelvic, hip, spine, and shoulder flexibility, deepening core awareness, and gaining isolated control of all the muscles necessary for bellydance. A necessary foundation for any level dancer.

2-4pm: Let's dance it!
Applying the techniques we focused on it the first workshop, it's now time to integrate it into our dancing. Focus this week will be on deepening our slow, ooey gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sexy, intoxicating look and feel; drilling sharp, pronounced isolations, with new yogic, integrated awareness that will change your dancing at the core!. Also learn healthy ways for laybacks and backbending to save your low back; layering techniques; and 'floating' upper body and posture for stage.

> About Deb:
Debra Rubin (MA, CMT, RYT) is a holistic health counselor, integrative bodyworker, and yoga teacher, with a private practice in Oakland, CA. Trained in both Eastern and Western healing arts, as well as integrative medicine, and various somatic therapies, she has facilitated at healing conferences all over the world, and regularly teaches in the Bay area. A core member and choreographer of UltraGypsy Dance Theater and regular sub for Jill Parker's classes, she fuses 10 years experience in holistic health with 25+ years of performance experience to create a core-integrated yoga class geared specifically for dancers.

“Tribal Fusion” by Heather Stants
edited by Tom Rehor

Tribal Fusion is an evolving dance form and in order to understand its direction one must explore its roots. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the American Belly Dance world was struck by the otherworldly beauty and power of a new form of dance emerging from a community of visionary artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carolena Nericcio and her company, Fat Chance Belly Dance, had begun a transformation in American Belly Dance with their creation of American Tribal Style (ATS). This form focuses on the company dancing as a unit, most often in an improvisational format of leaders and followers all attuned to the same movements, cues and combinations. The movement vocabulary as well as the costuming is an eclectic blend of influences from the many cultures throughout North Africa, India, Spain and the Middle East. The ATS costume usually consists of layers of pantaloons, skirts, belts and cholis made of antique textiles and tribal jewelry. The heavy costumes add to the earthiness of the movement style.

The beauty of ATS has spread to dancers nationally and internationally and - like any evolving art form - as it reaches new artists it takes on their characteristics and influences. The latest variant of this "tribal" dance is given the title "Tribal Fusion". A new generation of dancers has discovered ATS and stamped it with their experience and imagination creating a new dance form altogether. "Tribal Fusion" has become a catch-all label for the various representations of this evolving style. Tribal Fusion music choices range from authentic tribal recordings to modern DJ mixed tracks. The costumes may be comprised of layers of authentic textiles and tribal jewelry, scaled down sleek club wear or anything in between. The movement vocabulary may incorporate elements of ATS, modern dance, hip-hop as well as the diverse dances of the world. The performances can be improvisational, tightly choreographed or a combination of the two. Because Tribal Fusion is still in its infancy as an art form, its rules are not yet firmly established. As it continues to evolve, its relation to ATS grows more distant and controversial.

There have been many talented performers who have been making their mark in the world of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance over the past ten years.
The artist who many identify as the pioneer of this new fusion style is
Jill Parker, an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance. In the late
1990s Jill and her dance company, Ultra Gypsy, began to scale down the tribal costume, expand the movement vocabulary, work with modern DJ mixed music and play with theatrical themes in their performances. This had a significant impact on tribal dancers and opened up the floodgates of Tribal Fusion innovation. In early 2000 Urban Tribal Dance Company was born in San Diego, CA under the direction of Heather Stants, and has since popularized an innovative style inspired by hip hop, modern and interpretive dance, emphasizing flexibility and athleticism with a more streamlined costume to highlight movement. Two of Urban Tribal's original members have also made major contributions to Tribal Fusion costuming. Mardi Love set the trend with her tribal inspired soft yarn belts and cowry shell hair adornments and Melodia Medley created a line of dance pants that have become the standard for the Tribal Fusion community. Another artist to make significant contribution to the evolution of Tribal Fusion is Rachel Brice, widely recognized as the first Tribal Fusion soloist. Her approach to isolations and yoga infused dance training has crossed stylistic boundaries and expanded the number of Tribal Fusion enthusiasts worldwide. Many artists continue to create and expand upon this style, pushing the boundaries of Belly Dance with their theatricality, musical choice, costuming and venue selection. Tribal Fusion continues to be in a state of evolution.

The innovative voices carving out the path of Tribal Fusion have hit on an artistic expression that borrows from cultures of the past and takes them into the future. Tribal Fusion is a new art form with as many interpretations as there are artists performing. Festivals and events dedicated to ATS, Tribal Fusion and other related dance have sprung up all over the United States. The Tribal Belly Dance community has embraced fusion exploration. It could be many more years of pushing boundaries before Tribal Fusion settles into a definitive style, although for now it remains a testament to the enduring qualities of community, creativity and self expression within the world of belly dance.

Sarah leaves the foggy city tonight to continue her life's passion a little bit closer to the people and culture who have fascinated her so. We will miss her terribly. She has been a core member, choreographer, and instructor in Ultra Gypsy for 7 years (since she was in her teens!) and was a founding member of the new hottest of the hot Barbary Coast Shakedown. And that's just bellydance -- Her commitment to dance and the dance community did not stop there! Among numerous other projects, she also danced with Project Bandaloop (an aerial dance company) and was a dancer and mentor in Destiny Arts, a powerful outreach program that uses dance and arts to empower and inspire local youth. Her input and influence in this community has been tangible and invaluable. We were so lucky to have her.

But most importantly, we are so PROUD of her! I can't wait to see what she else she will bring to the world. I'm certain we haven't heard the last of the lovely Miss Sarah White.
San Francisco has long been the American gathering place for outlaws, dreamers, and bohemians -- ladies and gents from the wrong side of the tracks, living on the fashionable fringe. On Saturday, July 28, hike up your skirts and fulfill your gold-rush fantasies when the BARBARY COAST SHAKEDOWN presents a spectacular DANCEHALL REVUE at 12 Galaxies in the Mission District, San Francisco.

This bevy of Bay Area beauties -- a new collaboration between members of Ultra Gypsy, Bellyqueen, and others -- brings you an exquisitely crafted show full of sparkly chemistry and inspired soulful expression that’ll surely knock your socks off and leave you aching for more. Rich with color and emotion, the dance numbers by the BARBARY COAST SHAKEDOWN highlight a collaboration that is as enchanting as it is masterful.

Inspired by belly dancing backgrounds, cabaret capers, and bar-room ballyhoo, the BARBARY COAST SHAKEDOWN performs alchemy, taking dance steeped in tradition to a timeless new height.

Special guests the BOXCAR SAINTS bring their own slow-burning, darkly melodic mayhem to the night. From America’s twisted, run-down big-tops to the sad, whiskey-smashed rooms of last-chance losers, BOXCAR SAINTS weave together the roots of old-timey music with south-of-the-border longings and desperate gypsy midnight howls.
More musical and dance guests TBA will round out the evening in a dancehall decorated to titillate partygoers with a sensual saloon-style atmosphere.
> flexibility, deepening core awareness, and gaining

Sarah's class focuses on two rare styles of Gypsy dance. Divided into month-long sessions, she alternates between Turkish Roman 9/8 and Kalbeliya (dance of the Indian snake-charmers). Though different, both capture the spirit of "duende", the fire and essence of Roma expression. Sarah begins with a warm-up rooted in modern/jazz foundations, providing strengthening and conditioning, progressing into drills, choreography, and performance. The students will become familiar with unique rhythms, focus on technique, stage presence, and soak up a bit of history along the way. Sarah's class raises awareness of the ethics of rare dances, bringing to light the issues of marginalized groups through their beautiful and unexposed art forms.

Sarah White is a San Francisco native earning a degree in Performing Arts & Social Justice from Friends World Program, a unique school in which the student travels independently throughout the world studying the issues of their choice. She has completed detailed ethnographic research documenting with over 1000 pages on the arts of indigenous communities. Sarah lived for a year with the Kalbeliya Gypsies in the Thar desert learning and performing the dance of the Indian snake-charmers. After this she studied with a Roman (Gypsy) family in Istanbul, and later moved on to the Zar (a women's trance dance) in Cairo. Sarah has an extensive performance background with training in Aerial, Afro-Cuban Modern, Afro-Hatian, Ballet, Bharatanatyam, Flamenco, Flying Trapeze, Gymnastics, Hip-Hop, Kathak, Martial Arts (Kajukenbo, Wushu), Mexican Folkloric, Modern, Modern/Jazz Blues, Rajasthani Folk (Chari, Sapera, Ghoomar), Rope, Russian Character, Salsa, Tango, Tribal Bellydance (Tunisian, Egyptian, Morroccan), Tribal House-Hop, Turkish Roman, West-African and Yoga. For many years she was in the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company which addressed issues of race, class, sexism, homophobia and more through dance, martial arts, theater and spoken word. She was the star dancer and actress in Neil Young's internationally touring movie and rock-opera 'Greendale' and is currently a member of Project Bandaloop Youth Group (an aerial dance company) and Ultra Gypsy Dance Theatre Company.

Hope to see you all there...

Five years ago, when I first wrote about the dancers of Fat Chance, there were only few tattoed bellydance troupes. (Re-translators note: either the author or the original translator has to be mistaken here, as his first article on Fat Chance was published in the November 1996 issue of the Taetowier Magazin. I know because I own that issue, too.) But things have changed since. Nowadays there are tattooed troupes all over the US. For this article I met with three of the most talented from the Bay Area: Fat Chance, Ultra Gypsy and Indigo.
