  • all I can say right now is I can't wait to see what you have to offer in the video!!!
I love lots of technique and moves (not necessarily combos, but moves you can practice and throw in anywhere) - technique is great because its not just level oriented.
the other thing I can input is that I have taken a workshop with you before and loved it. It was definately challenging and frustrating, but it gave me soooo much to work on and practice later that it was worth it! your teaching style is just what I prefer.
I'm located in a suburb with a great teacher nearby in Toronto, and when I can't afford classes, I love dvd's to expand my warm up and drills practice. They also provide great inspiration in so many ways.
I would love to see some performances (the more the better!!!) :D
    Jills bootcamp on dvd.....totally can't wait!!! :D
  • First: "BOUT DAMN TIME!!

ok, now on to your q's (my answers with ***):

what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?:
***When I spent money on a DVD from a dancer I'm familiar with I want to lean something that is unique to that dancer. In your case I think of theatrics as something you've pioneered and nobody else really teaches. I also see your style as a combination of grace, suppleness and feirce strength coupled with *~Sexy Slinky Smooth~*!! Teach me how to dance like dat!

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
    ***performing & teaching bellydancer

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
    ***Maui, Rural

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
    ***No

    have you studied with me?
***Yes, I consider you my most influencial teacher.

what did you like about it?
***I wish I could give you a really clear, articulate answer here but... ~something~ about your teaching style gets through to me (past the brain and into the body) in a way no other teach ever has. I don't know what that ~something~ is! I often wonder if (hope) I embody it when I'm teaching a class.

    what was frustrating?
*** In recent expreience sometimes you're a little ....um, stern, almost military in your delivery, expecially when correcting the group as a whole. It lacks patience. I've been to yoga classes where the teacher barks orders like a drill sargent and makes corrections in a condescending way that makes the student feel stupid. I don't learn well under those circumstances, I don't go back to those teachers.

what got you interested in bellydance? how did you find out about it?
***Himalayan Fair 1991, Live Oak Park FCBD (including you). I had no expreiences with BD before then.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
    ***strength-grace-poise-elegance

what has helped you learn most?
***I need to think about that one.....

    what has you most frustrated?
***My own physical limitations (don't think I'll ever be able to do floorwork like you!)

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
***teach me really challenging things but in levels so that I can work up to the hard stuff. ***Show me strengthening excercises that corespond directly with the moves your teaching so that I can understand my own strengths and areas that need work.
***Make lots of suggestions for varieations so that I can create my own look based on your teachings.
***I know you can't "be there" in a video but it's helpful that you are HERE (on tribe) if we have questions.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
***the poly-rhythm stuff that you taught last summer on Maui. I'd LOVE to have that on a video that I can follow along with!
***Please make a quality video!! I find low quality lighting, sounds and video to be really distracting. Even if the teachings are worth a million, I usually watch these videos once or twice then they end up at the bottom of the pile.
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?
I'm looking to be challenged. There are so many DVDs at the 101 level, I'd love something more advanced. With drills and useful warm up/exercises. Something focused more on technique instead of just choreography.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
Experienced and performing. Not currently teaching but have in the past.

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
Las Vegas, NV - very urban, baby.

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
I took a workshop and I just loved it. I like the signature moves and the way you broke the movements down. Also enjoyed the combos. There wasn't anything frustrating about it. I did wish it was a longer workshop. : )

what got you interested in bellydance?
I thought is was a beautiful form of self expression.

how did you find out about it?
I saw bellydance for the first time in a Morrocan restaurant. I asked the dancer where to go to learn it and I haven't looked back.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
    I aspire to inspire.

what has helped you learn most?
Variety of teachers. And drills, drills, drills.

    what has you most frustrated?
I'm balanced challenged. Working on quad strength too for seamless level changes. And stomach work such as flutters and rolls. There isn't much out there on those things that are so beautiful to watch and challenging to master. Oh and floorwork. Not much out there on tribal floorwork.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
In the DVD it would be great to see different angles. Such as in the FCBD Vol 7, Carolena does the move to a mirror so you can see her front and back view and there is a small shot of her feet which is extremely helpful. It is also great to see the moves incorporated into a dance at the end of the DVD so you can see how to transition from move to move.

I'm really looking forward to your DVD!
  • it's about time, my dear!
    • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?
~ A warm up that takes less than 45-minutes, but warms and stretches all the muscles used for the movements in the DVD and increases my heart rate a bit.
~ Instruction that is clear and focuses on more than just the basic movements.
~I don't want to learn a choreography per se, but I really love some of the UG signature combos. They make me think about moving my body in ways that hadn't occurred to me before, which inspires me to take those combos and play with them until I create something of my own.
~Layering, please. You teach it so well.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
      ~Experienced/Performing/ soon-to-be-teaching

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
      ~Houston, Texas. Urban.

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
      ~ Some, yes.

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
~I studied from you at Tribal Camp in Texas and this year at TribalCon.
I like that you keep the class focused and that you stay on task; you make your students really work. Something I have always said about your teaching is how graceful and pretty I feel doing the movements you teach once I have a basic understanding of them. I think your strongest ability as a teacher is how you build and incorporate visualizations into a movement or combination; your concepts are clear, relevant, and people understand them. And you drill movements just enough so there is some degree of muscle memory.
Basically, you know exactly what you are doing. I have yet to experience you re-teaching something you just taught because you forgot a part of it or it was incorrect.
If I have ever been frustrated in your workshops, it has been with my own body not "getting it" quickly enough.

what got you interested in bellydance?
~ I went to a private party as a child and saw a woman bellydance there. She danced to a scratchy 33 1/3 album, but somehow that made it even more beautiful. I had wanted to learn ever since. When I was older, my friend Obsidia and I took our first bellydance class together. We were both hooked- and still are.

how did you find out about it?

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
~I want to be a solid dancer. I want to feel that when I move on stage or in a restaurant that it's solid, beautiful, and it resonates with the audience as something authentic. I also want to be able to create something that is unique to me, as I don't want to be a cookie cutter dancer. I want to teach others and watch them blossom and be rewarded by their hard work. I want to dance with people I love and care about as long as I can.

what has helped you learn most?
~Determined focus. And drills. Lots and lots of drills.
And the ability to laugh at myself. And then more drills.

      what has you most frustrated?
~A few things. Arms, turns, and foot work mostly.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
I~ really like having notes for what I learn. I think it would be wonderful if your DVD came with a little "student guide" with notes and tips. Or perhaps this could be a section in the DVD.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
      ~Come to Texas more? :)
      • I can't really think of more to say when Nari said it so eloquently...

Jill, having taken workshops with you at Tribal Camp and Tribal Fest, I can say that your mixture of more folkloric dance with tribal/tribal fusion truly is inspiring. You do make me feel like a pretty dancer when I'm in your workshops and you inspire me to think outside my comfort zone.

I am stoked for anything you put out on DVD because it can ONLY make me a better dancer!
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

    variety of moves and combinations
    drill sets
in depth explanation of movement (ie muscle contraction - o/i of muscles - visual descriptions like "draw an 8 on the wall")
    multiple views
history of movement - ie: this is american.. this is tunisian and means this.. this is... yadda
    performance tips

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
    experienced / performing

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
    Seattle

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
    Lots!

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
Yes - I really enjoyed many aspects of your teaching. I love how you push, that you always return to the basics, that you take the time in class to address any questions and try to describe a move in several different ways, class was never boring.

what got you interested in bellydance?
Dont mean to embarrass you, but you did. I think I told you that story before ;)

how did you find out about it?
    ...

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
Well, I aspire to always learn.. keep learning. I aspire to have fun.

what has helped you learn most?
watching others dance... watching them closely! This is why a really good instructional DVD can be great. You get the option to select the move or series of moves to try to master and replay. I prefer to also have an instructor evaluate me as the mirror sometimes lies (i swear it does ha) but even sometimes in a group class the instructor may not give such feedback. I think a combination DVD / group class / privates are the best way to go. See this way you can release your DVD, we can all practice our hearts out, then when you come 'round with the Gypsies we can take privates from you and you can tell us what we are doing wrong ;)

    what has you most frustrated?
I get easily frustrated with myself - generally when I dont pick something up quickly - that usually doesnt have much to do with the way something is being shown to me - not so much instruction based.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
    See Above.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
probably, but not at the moment.

thanks so much for your valuable input!
    :)
  • i'll be looking forward to this DVD!

    **answers to questions**

what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

    - i would be most interested in instruction on *creating* choreographies and incorporating props

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?

out of this list, i would pick experienced, performing & teaching

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?

i'm in columbus, ohio, usa. it's midwestern urban.

do you have good quality instruction in your area?

we have lots of good quality beginner instruction, but it starts to suffer for higher levels of dancers.

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?

i have taken a few workshops with you. one of my favorite and most instructive moments was when you invited us to touch the base of your throat to feel what you were closing off to create a flutter. i liked the level of challenge - it seemed that dancers from all levels could benefit from the workshop. i was frustrated by the number of people in the room, which affected visibility.

what got you interested in bellydance?

there was book in the library in my hometown called The Compleat Bellydancer, and i couldn't get over that good-lookin' woman's eye makeup.

how did you find out about it?

    browsing shelves.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?

be a better teacher. learn more about the anatomy of the body so that i can be a better teacher. create better choreographies. assimilate the knowledge i've attained into a personal dance style. create shows that are exciting to all audiences, not just bellydance audiences.

what has helped you learn most?

working with other people. i find i feel one way about my dancing at home, but when i start matching it up with the troupe, i begin to tear apart exactly when your arm moves to what exact position, etc.

    what has you most frustrated?

i am frustrated by level changes, because i love the way they look so much, but an old injury prevents me from creating them well.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?

get me thinking. i'm not the type of dancer who buys a DVD and memorizes all the combos so i can perform them exactly in my own shows. i like to learn what's on the DVD and then play with it to make it my own.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?

i would avoid spending much time creating a basic drills section. most of the videos that have come out in the last year have included basics like ups and downs and extensive drilling of them - i'm thinking of videos by rachel brice, sharon kihara, kassar, darshan, and ariellah. i think you could offer something more unique.

thanks so much for your valuable input!
  • Eeee can't wait!!

what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

--Refining movements and combinations, and ideas on how to create my own combinations. The reasons behind why certain moves look good paired together. Teach me a combination, and tell me why you chose to put those moves together in that order.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?

--8.5 years dancing, 8 performing. Learned lots, lots to learn!

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?

--Atlanta GA, in the city (thanks for coming to tribal con!)

do you have good quality instruction in your area?

    --Yup!

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?

--I've taken a couple workshops with you. My first non-cabaret workshop was with you 7 years ago. I liked the combinations you drilled us on, and your suggestions for conditioning for floor work (this was back when the drop wasn't so big and overdone, and I asked you how to build up to it. You had us do floor laybacks). I still can't get my butt cheeks to jump like yours did during that floor conditioning bit-that still frustrates me.

what got you interested in bellydance?

--Medieval fair junkie as a teenager. The bellydancers were my favorite part. They took gravity by the neck and made it behave like they wanted it to!

how did you find out about it?

--The "belly button jewel" in my mother's jewelry box she let me play in when I was 4.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?

--Never stop learning. Refine, get my butt kicked, gain muscle control, learn what my style is, have fun. Improvise solos without becoming repetitive, without forgetting about my hands or my facial expressions.

what has helped you learn most?

--Being thrown out into performing very early on. Being challenged and challenging myself, (i.e. if this is easy, layer it, make it harder). Great teachers! Great visual descriptions, i.e. "think of this movement like you are scooping icecream out of a giant vat with your hip".

    what has you most frustrated?

--Classes that don't kick my ass as much as I'd like. If I'm having a hard time with something, I'm challenged and I'm happy. I want it to be difficult. I learned that it is my own responsibility to challenge myself.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?

--Really detailed verbal descriptions of what you are doing and what muscles you are using, where your weight is, and what to check for in myself to make sure my posture and execution is proper.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?

--you are awesome. My first tribal teacher said of you, "she makes it look so easy, like she's talking on the telephone."
That calm strength is something I loved about your style. You look like you are using such strength while simultaneously showing that this is the most relaxing think you could imagine doing. So I'd buy your DVD for those things which are specifically Jill.
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?
I am looking for an adequate warm-up and something unique in the instruction. That is to say, I know how to do a hip lift or drop. I don't want basic movements broken down for me. I want to learn something that I probably wouldn't come up with on my own and something that reflects the style and dance philosophy of the instructor. It's always valuable to me to get inside the teacher's mind a bit, because really, I can make up combos myself if I must. But nothing beats hearing insights from an experience dancer.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
I dunno what I'd say there. I'm coming up on 3 years of dancing and I perform solos in showcases, but no paid work yet.

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
    Sacramento, CA.

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
Hm. Hot Pot... yeah. Good quality!

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
    Not yet. YET.

what got you interested in bellydance?
I used to play in an African percussion ensemble, and I learned some African dance styles. Then I saw some bellydancers at one of the arts festivals we played at. I was totally hooked by them.

how did you find out about it?
I took one workshop back when I first became interested in bellydance, but it was cabaret and I was not very interested in that. I lived on an island with no access to regular classes. Then, when I moved to Sac, I picked up a postcard for BloodMoon: Dark Wonderland. And the rest is history!

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
I want people to be entertained by my dancing, whether it's somber or joyful. I want to take the audience with me somewhere. Also, I wanna be totally awesomely buff!

what has helped you learn most?
Persistance and the encouragement of my teachers. They treat their students very much as equals, which is important to me. I'm not sure I could continue in long-term classes if my teacher wasn't that friendly. I know some people are okay with that relationship, but it makes me uncomfortable because I wasn't raised with it.

    what has you most frustrated?
My body's limitations. I have scoliosis, and when my back gets out of whack and I have to stop dancing, I get really frustrated.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
Well, in terms of just dancing... I'd say pointing out most common errors in a move or a posture, so that people can look for them in themselves.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
I would absolutely buy an instruction DVD by you. Just for the record.
  • I am so excited about this!!! I can't wait to have a dvd at home to practice with.

*what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?*
Technique!!, drills to grow and add on with/ grow with, a great sweat producing flowing warm up with strengthening exercises.

*where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?**

Suburban with little cities nearby, NYC 2 hrs away. here-- It's a Pretty dismal scene for advanced technique, dont even ask me about progressive dance work!

do you have good quality instruction in your area?**
see above---no. not immediately available unless I go to the NYC.

**have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?**

Yes-- I have taken our workshops only however. I loved how hard you made us work, frustrated when it ended!

**what got you interested in bellydance?**
A new chapter in my dance experience, and the most fun and freeing!

**how did you find out about it?**
was looking for an adult ballet class--somehow belly dance popped up in my browser--- and away I went.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
** truly dancing, creating unique pieces and quality, well executed, entertaining dance vignettes!-- solo at this time---getting back into troupe stuff hopefully this summer if I can find willing and able cohorts!

**what has helped you learn most?**
frequent workshops--dancing often as I can, watching others perform.

    **what has you most frustrated?**
The lack of earnest understanding of tribal infused and progressive belly dance as a performance art in my geographical area---finding ppl willing to work hard to produce quality work, and the venues in which to showcase them in that doesnt demean the art. i hope that doesnt sound pretentious---

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
**any troupe/marketing ideas you have to help curtail the above issues, how to dance as well as I can for as long as I can!!! That's all! :) LoL.

***can you think of anything else that seems of value?***
I dont really care for learning choreography in a video---- i wouldnt perform what I learned from it-- and I learn much better from movement concepts or rhythm analysis to create the music in me vs. using steps ....does that make sense?

Thanks so much for asking us about our thoughts Jill!! i cant wait to see it, own it, use it!
    xo-joY
  • I want "Jill's Drills!!" So, like every possible way to do a slammin shimmy!
    • I'm in Middle America, and have never had the pleasure of studying with you, Jill. The thought of an instructional DVD rocks so hardcore! I've been a long-time admirer/supporter, so anything you could possibly include would be nothing short of fan-freaking-tastic!
Good luck, and I look forward to its release!
      <3
      • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?
        A warm up section
        Drills Section
Technique section (could be combined with Drills)
Moves & Combos broken down by style or body part (hips, chest, arms, tunisian, tribal, fusion, etc etc)
        Adapting for personal use.
        Performance section!

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
Performing & teaching, probably an intermediate level

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
        Burlington, VT, RURAL

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
No! (besides me :) I am plateau-ing and need expert advanced instruction and feedback to progress further.

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
Took a workshop once. Liked everything (pace, drills, material, quality of instruction. Frustrating to only be able to take 1 workshop, would love to take more.

what got you interested in bellydance?
Needed an outlet from engineering classes, decided on bellydance on whim.

how did you find out about it?
        Internet to find class.

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
Good technique, strong muscles in weird places. Making it look fun, easy, amazing, and difficult all at the same time.

what has helped you learn most?
Taking workshops and watching master dancers as they dance. I learn so much just from watching dancers in person, and listen to all the little technique gems that drop from their lips.

        what has you most frustrated?
Having to be primarily self taught.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
Do you offer consultations via DVD's? I am sorely in need to feedback.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
Putting out a series of videos that build on each other (intro, intermediate, advanced).
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?
intermediate/advanced level DVD i can practice/drill with from warmup to cool down (like a class), which splits up intstructional vs. practice sections for use all the time. DVD with lots of different moves/techniques presented for ideas for occasional use or information. informational videos about topics like staging choreography, performance technique, musicality, theatricality, etc.
I am sort of right-left challenged, so videos shot from the back w/ mirror view work best for me if the description includes right/left wording.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
intermediate, always learning how much more there is to learn. I am the only tribal-style teacher in my area (for about 1hr drive in any direction) .

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
    Mystic, CT, suburban/semi-rural

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
    no

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
Yes, several workshops over about 5 years or so, TF, Syracuse, NYC, etc.
I like the warmups and drills of shimmies/layering. Especially appreciated hearing how some movements were just drills/learning and not necessarily performance-ready, and that performance requires different nuance and presentation. I liked getting useful feedback. Only did a couple of choreography ones which were maybe a little frustrating as I don't learn choreography very quickly, especially if it includes new-to-me movements.

what got you interested in bellydance?
was looking for an exercise class which was fun and it was offered by a local yoga studio

how did you find out about it?
a friend told me about it

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
always learning new things! working with community and musicians more.

what has helped you learn most?
taking workshops and classes with top tier teachers. working with other dancers of similar skills and motivation

    what has you most frustrated?
having to travel long distances for workshops (or hosting them myself, then not being able to take them because I am running the event)
sparsity of quality dancers in my area
recovery from whiplash shoulder/neck injury. This is taking SO LONG it is difficult to be patient and accept limitations.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
would love a Jill's Drills DVD with challenging strength/stretch section.

I would also like to see something like "evolution of technique/steps" side by side, on a video.. For instance, the traditional folkloric step is done this way in this kind of dance, it changed to this when done by so-and-so, then it was fused with this flavor, and now in tribal fusion it can look like this, etc.
  • Jill! Yay! I'm so excited! To answer your questions:

I want to make a truly helpful dvd and would love input from dancers like yourselves.

what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)? The closest DVD I've found to what I'm looking for is Rachel Brice's yoga and drills because it incorporates a lot of drills that a) I can do and b) that can reasonaby be done a few times a week even when I'm short on time (no crazy getting on the floor, busting out the yoga mat, clearing lots of space etc) and c) that keep my muscles strong without going crazy (sometimes I don't need to work my ipsial-soas-quadrangle you know?)

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer? Somewhere in between all 4. I don't perform regularly and certain intermediate stuff still hangs me up (like glute squeezes).

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban? Humboldt County which is fairly rural.

do you have good quality instruction in your area? Yes but very little in the way of drills/conditioning focus

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating? Yes, I took a workshop from you in Long Beach several years ago and to date it was one of the most memorable, helpful workshops I've ever taken (it was also the first workshop I ever took!). Choreography is frustrating for me. I dislike videos that have 15 minutes of drills and 35 minutes of combo/choreography. I want to really really learn how to get the movements into my muscles before I move on to combining the moves.

what got you interested in bellydance? My physique has always been short and curvy, and bellydance was something that celebrated curves.

how did you find out about it? I picked up a Neena and Veena video when I was 15.

what do you aspire to in your dancing? I have just begun teaching to fill a gap in the local dance community. My area is sort of out of the way and there are not a lot of teachers teaching the sort of material I "grew up" on. I missed the sisterhood of ATS so I started my own class. I'd love to become the kind of teacher I have learned from, and on a personal level I am striving to have precise muscular control, to access the muscles it's hard for me to engage (glutes, lower abs mainly) and to really look polished no matter what I'm doing. As an ATS dancer I also struggle to keep both sides of my body "even" in terms of muscular control, which means working my left side out more than my right during practice.

what has helped you learn most? youtube and the ready access to my favorite performers videos has greatly inspired me. Workshops from various teachers helps because inevitably, after you hear something 6 different ways, explained and demonstrated by 6 different teachers, ultimately you figure out what works for you. Also, a sense of not having to do everything exactly the same way as something else. If my undulations are more subtle than someone elses, it helps to know that that's okay as long as I'm executing them correctly.

what has you most frustrated? The constant use of drills that I just cannot do. Glute work is constantly used in a lot of recent instructional DVDs but they almost never describe what you should be doing, alternative sitting positions in order to access those obscure muscles and various exercises would be helpful (for the lower abs too. I cannot seem to seperate my lowers from my uppers).

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you? (come to Humboldt come to Humboldt come to Humboldt!) ahem...uh, well, I think you and ultra gypsy are pretty underrated in the BD community. More exposure to you guys, your style, your performances, would be great.

can you think of anything else that seems of value? monkies.

I'm so looking forward to this DVD!
    • I highly enjoyed your workshops at Tribal Con. I would love it if you would go over some of your combos and moves that you don't normally see on videos; like the pelvic walk and old style figure 8. Also, I love your explanation on shimmies and layering. Would be great to have on an instructional dvd. :O)
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)? Clearly excecuted new moves!

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer? experienced, performing teacher

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban? Wisconsin, urban

do you have good quality instruction in your area? yes

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating? yes, how fast I learned from you in a short amount of time, innovative moves, only frustrating that my body didn't immediatly do what I wanted but that's a good frustrating-- just challanging enough

what got you interested in bellydance? dancing with others that didn't have to be my husband who won't dance.

how did you find out about it? at a festival

what do you aspire to in your dancing? inspire others to want to dance

what has helped you learn most? one-on-one teaching of talented instructors

what has you most frustrated? learning something wrong and having to redo it.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you? instructional dvd with different angles and explinations of the different angles. TV isn't three dementional and that can be lost.

can you think of anything else that seems of value? costuming or how you see inspiration might help others see inspiration, what your daily routine is or what you reccomend.
  • what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)? I want the flavor of the teacher to come through. I want technique, performance, and all the little niggling things that help me to self-correct since I can't have you there to correct me on the spot.

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer? the latter 3

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban? Lexington, KY--urban, but small town

do you have good quality instruction in your area? EXCELLENT!!

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating? I like how seriously you take the art form. You whip everyone into shape--you don't take shortcuts, and you don't dawdle. By example, you show us, "I'm here to help you become a great dancer. But if you're into it, you better be INTO it, because there's no way to become great without putting forth a hell of a lot of effort. Being great is not easy work." I like your creativity and the clarity you have in your dance moves.

what got you interested in bellydance? I took a class with Teresa on a whim, thinking it would be just a semester-long thing. But I never quit!

how did you find out about it? My mom took a bellydance class when i was a kid, so i'd been introduced to it in my young years.

what do you aspire to in your dancing? clarity, being emotive, precision, ebullience,

what has helped you learn most? (interesting question) having great teachers along the way--encouraging, knowledgable and talented themselves, correcting me when I wasn't doing something correctly, giving lots of imagery for understanding the moves. Also, my own anatomic studies to help me understand where moves are 'coming from'--originating from.

what has you most frustrated? I think my most frustrating thing in bellydance are primadonnas. For myself, however, I get most frustrated with my lordosis--because it looks like i have bad posture even when I AM tucking my tail.

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you? use lots of descriptors, hoping that one set of descriptors will set a light off in my head about what it is that you're trying to get across.

can you think of anything else that seems of value? I haven't seen it yet, but I think having a little blurb of you talking about your personal opinions about dance would be really awesome. sort of a guide to how you see it best fit to BE a bellydancer--whether it is in how you deal with other dancers, how you feel about performance, etc.
  • Hi Jill,

    1. what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

Aside from the obvious basics, I like to learn something 'signature' from my teachers - what makes your style (or Ultra Gypsy) unique? What would you most like to impart upon your students who don't get to study with you regularly - or, what do you find your regular student need the most instructional support for in class?

I like to learn combinations over choreography, because it's then easier to remix it into my own style.

Having seen the Barbary Coast Shakedown and various UG performances, I'd also like to learn some performance and theatrical technique as it applies to bellydance.

At work, I'm involved with developing a (not dance) course that will be offered online.
We have been developing it so it offers three levels of information. The basics, the would you like to learn more, and the extensive detail - this could be accomplished by DVD too.

    2. are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?

I teach and perform but in the tribal context consider myself inter-advanced. I have a lot to learn!

    3. where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?

Ottawa, ON - medium sized city - I am the only tribal instructor here and direct the city's only troupe :)

    4. do you have good quality instruction in your area?

Oriental dance - yes, Raks Sharqi Jalilah and Denise Enan (of Egypt's NAtional folkloric troupe)
Tribal - I have to go elsewhere so average a workshop every 2 months.

    5. have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?

Yes - I like the attention to detail, combinations (for the reason listed above), and 'signature' movements. The drilling is great!
Frustrating - well, mostly that I get to take your classes very rarely. So there's lack of continuity.

    6. what got you interested in bellydance?

    The community and the movement.

    7. how did you find out about it?

the good people at dancestudios.ca post their ads everywhere.

    8. what do you aspire to in your dancing?

    A strong level of technique.

    9. what has helped you learn most?

studying with lots of different teachers who have different perspectives on how to teach movement, and taking a lot of basics classes to drill.

    10. what has you most frustrated?

Practicing by DVD - there is no one to offer corrections so I rely on the mirror and experience from workshops to self-correct.
    Lack of Time. Day job.

    11. if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?

A DVD could be broken down into sections. I like Sera's East Coast Tribal DVD because it breaks down to sections of warmup, drills, and individual combinations. It's a good format when there is only a short time to practice and it is easy to be selective rather then scroll through a series of movements.

I also like Gypsy Caravan's DVD where they faced away from the 'audience' and repeated combinations so that the viewer could easily follow along, over and over.

A practice guide style DVD would also be helpful. So it would be like actually taking a class.

can you think of anything else that seems of value?

thanks so much for your valuable input!
    • Hi Jill!!!!

I'm dying to study with you, since I can't go to the United States I'd love an instructional DVD

      1. what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

I'm looking for an instructional DVD that seems like a workshop, i don't care if it last 4 hours.

I'd love a DVD full of shimmy drills, I like technique, I hate choreographies, I love performances.

      Kisses
      • YAY! i have the attention span of a gnat on speed these days so short & sweet - loved your classes top to bottom but i really loved the warm ups - hard as hell, but necessary! loved the combo of pilates and yoga - stretches and conditioning - good stuff!!
        • your feedback has been so helpful.
          THANK YOU!
          jill
          • Yay!!!

what are you looking for in an excellent instructional dvd (and why)?

            drills
advance movements and ideas of how to string them together well
            styling unique to that instructor
FAQ stuff like their take on gigs, choreography, improv, costuming, the direction of the dance, what it all means to them

are you a a beginner, experienced, performing or teaching bellydancer?
            teaching, performing

where are you located? city state country Is it rural suburban urban?
North Augusta, SC USA suburban mainly

do you have good quality instruction in your area?
not without a long drive :(

have you studied with me? what did you like about it? what was frustrating?
yes in workshops. The simplicity of drilling and working movements until you're really good at them, then layering to them, how unique you alway are despite what the hot move/combo/trend currently is in the bellydance world, How you were not afraid to correct people. My only frustration is that the workshops have been so far and few between on the east (southeast at least) coast.

what got you interested in bellydance?
I went to a class on a lark with some friends a month before I got married, thinking I'd ;earn something and be able to throw it out at my wedding. Yeah right :D It was over a year before I ever performed in public at a student show.

how did you find out about it?
through a friend who later dropped out and years later than that even, when I was teaching, she became my student. :)

what do you aspire to in your dancing?
telling a story, leading the audience on a journey I have crafted for them and always entertaining them :)

what has helped you learn most?
            teaching and being so isolated

            what has you most frustrated?
being so isolated :D and being in the buckle of the bible belt, the closed mindedness my troupe and I have worked so hard to overcome. Then, to see a brand new group of dancers pop up from nowhere in my area, very scantily clad, do wide legged shimmies in people's faces before getting on the floor to thrust their hips and toss their hair. It seems like so much of the work we have done in the past years is getting so quickly undone in the local community :(

if i cant be there with you how can i best help you?
break a move down in several ways, explain the muscles I should be feeling it in, remind me of posture often

can you think of anything else that seems of value?
tidbits/stories/do' and don'ts/ethics from your expriences
